My take on "The Chemistry" of Web Services like Twitter, Friendfeed and Identica

Let us first see what people usually say:

Web Service A _____ (insert Friendfeed, Identica, Pownce etc) is not good as it does not have users. Twitter Rocks! The reason is that - it is happening and got lots of power users.

My reply is as follows:

Twitter is no doubt a very good service, but the first part of the quote is in bad taste. What happens the most when some web service explodes? We see spam spam and more spam. This is exactly what is happening with Twitter. Fake profiles are filling up and Twitter isn't able to handle them.

Friendfeed and Identica are really a good service, as only refined and sensible people create profiles on these services. You won't see spam profiles to the extent to which we see on twitter.

There is always a trade-off. With mass usage, we get more awesomeness only if spam is checked out! If S/N ratio falls below a certain level, it is useless to continue. Identica never had this problem.
